India's premier inter-club golf tournament - driving the growth of golf across North East India, from the tea gardens of Assam to the world stage.
The BORBHAG Cup was instituted in 2021 by The BORBHAG Group with a single, clear purpose: to bring the game of golf to the forefront of sporting life in Northeast India. The region possesses significant potential for golf, particularly when integrated with the economic potential driven by tourism and industrial development - and it has a large golf infrastructure, including courses in tea estates, that deserves far greater visibility..
The Inaugural Tournament was held on 3rd January 2021 at Misa Polo Club, Assam - initially envisioned as a competition among clubs from Assam - and saw participation from four states, with more than 88 golfers from seven teams. What began as a regional gathering has since grown into something considerably larger. The Second Edition in January 2023 brought together 96 golfers from 16 clubs across 6 states, including 15 professionals. By the Third Edition in 2024, 120 golfers representing 17 clubs across 5 states had taken part, with 18 professionals competing.
The Fourth Edition - held on 30th November 2025 at Misa Polo Club, Assam - brought together golfers from the Indian Administrative Services, Indian Revenue Services, Indian Police Services, Defence, Civil society, Tea industry, PSUs such as OIL & ONGC, the development sector, railways, para military, reflecting the breadth of community the Cup has come to represent.
The BORBHAG Cup is an effort to blend heritage with the modern world - augmenting and promoting existing infrastructure, and building platforms through sport that contribute to a spirit of camaraderie. It is also the first dedicated platform for professional golfers in the Northeast region, with the organisers committed to identifying, nurturing, and empowering talent from remote areas - providing opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach, and contributing to both individual excellence and national sporting achievement.
The organisers continue to work towards bringing participation from across the country, with a focus on increased visibility for the courses of the Northeast region. The belief is a simple but ambitious one: that the Northeast has what it takes - in talent, in terrain, and in tradition - to compete on the world stage.
"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented."

As we enter the fourth year now of an effort that started on the Misa Course by six golfers - five years ago, we have grown and are thankful to Golfers, Clubs, Patrons, our teams and well wishers who have been a part of the journey.
While we have a long way to go - it is heartening to see three tournaments happen on the same day between Assam & Meghalaya. Despite this, The BORBHAG Cup had 97 golfers play this year - showing there is ample space and interest. As platforms, it is now our responsibility to have a regional calendar and better coordination, giving golfers maximum opportunity for play.
In recent times, Golf has increasingly become a force multiplier. it has not only led to the birth of a golf economy but also provided a boost to industries such as tourism and real estate. Our vision is to build, and bring the best golfers to states of the North East as well as provide professionals from the region opportunity to compete on national and international platforms. Further, Golf can act as a unique bridge for diplomacy, tourism, and business including with the South East Asia region and Japan.
In closing, I can only reiterate the importance of PARTNERSHIPS - something that we at BORBHAG display in all that we do. If we have to promote golf - champions like Ministry of Tourism, ATDC; courses like Misa; Clubs & Professional Bodies from across the country - must come together and build an ecosystem that can take golfing to the next level in the state and larger region.
From being the first tournament series that provides caddie turned pros an opportunity to play to building diverse collaborations - we look forward to exciting times for golf ahead.
